The Lean culture in business has fast taken a significant following, with many companies seeking to gain from the benefits it brings. However, what is meant by “lean management?” Lean management, also known as “lean manufacturing” or “lean production,” is a business philosophy that focuses on providing for the actual needs of customers by managing and organizing work to improve a company’s performance.
Adopted from Toyota’s operating model, “The Toyota Way,” the lean management model relies on three main views. The first is to deliver value from the perspective of the customer. The second is to eliminate what is regarded as “waste” to the business. This management style regards non-value operations such as transportation, overproduction, overprocessing, and waiting as “waste” to the customers. The final aim of implementing Lean management is to implement continuous improvement in an ever-changing business environment.
