If you’re a caregiver, you might find our entertaining sensory activities for children with autism a big hit in your home or facility. Engaging in these sensory exercises helps create neural pathways, improve their sensory processing systems, stimulate the brain, and improve social skills.

Window Painting

Children working on this sensory activity will have fun making a mess and creating art on the window. You can have the child work on their writing skills by practicing letters on the window and even pictures to follow each letter. Activities like these help build their tactile and fine motor skills.

The steps to creating the shaving cream paint are simple. Gather some cups, shaving cream, tempera paint, and some brushes. Let the child fill each cup with shaving cream and a dollop of paint, then stir. You’re now ready to paint the window!

Hide-and-Seek Bottle

A sensory activity that you can take on the go is always a must with an anxious child. Giving the child a hide-and-seek bottle will keep them busy for several minutes or even an hour. This little game distracts the child when they might be acting out and need something to focus on.

Funnel rice into an old plastic bottle, toss in miniature figurines, twist on the cap, and shake. When you’re in the car, ask the loved one to find different objects to keep them busy.

Sandbox Play

This entertaining sensory activity for children with autism is very calming and the perfect place for imaginative play. You’ll need a sandbox, but if you’re in a pinch, the perfect alternative is buying a small plastic pool and some bags of sand. The sand stays in the pool, and it’s the ideal size for children. Add toys like small trucks, shovels, action figures, etc.

Homemade Instruments

If your child or loved one likes to make some noise, this is the perfect activity for them. Playing musical instruments has the benefit of making new connections in the brain and strengthening existing ones.

Examples of DIY instruments could be, but are not limited to, can drums, bottle maracas, plate tambourines, and straw harmonicas. Get the band together and create your next single.

Every child with autism is unique in their own way. While they’re amid these activities, it might even be a good idea to monitor their health metrics. Smartwatches are excellent tools for autistic children, as they help track health metrics, provide GPS location, and allow children to text and call without the
Internet.

The best part about sensory activities will always be disguising play as an educational benefit. As a caregiver, you want the best for your child or loved one, and participating in these activities with them will put the brightest smile on both of your faces.
