Bad habits can be a major drag on your life. You know you shouldn’t indulge, but you often find that you engage in bad habits anyway.  Let’s discuss ways to stop bad habits and break away from them for good.

Choose a Healthy Substitute

Bad habits usually result from stress or boredom. You’re either doing something to break the monotony, or you’re trying to suppress your emotions. You might combat this by substituting your bad habit with something that’s good for you. For instance, instead of smoking, chew gum. Or instead of ordering unhealthy takeout, get healthy takeout instead.

Cut Out Your Triggers

You might be triggered by some external circumstance in your life such as watching something stressful on TV or being yelled at by your boss. The trick here is to look for ways to first identify and then cut out triggers. This could involve removing dysfunctional people from your life, turning off the TV, or even changing the type of work that you do.

Surround Yourself with Positive People

We’re often a reflection of the people that we are closest to. The way we behave mirrors the way that they behave. When people go for alcohol treatment at professional clinics, they’re always in the company of healthy, supportive people. That’s how behavioral change really occurs.

Therefore, look for ways to surround yourself with positive people. Find groups that you can join and shift your circle of friends away from those who grind you down.

Another strategy you can use is to visualize your success. You can view what your life will look like if you eventually kick your bad habits and live how you want to live.

People sometimes call visualization “finding your why.” It’s the thing deep down that provokes you to want to succeed. You want a real reason for doing what you’re doing. When you picture your future self without bad habits, it also changes your emotions. You find yourself feeling more positive about the future, giving you energy. This experience then changes your actions. Because you feel so good about kicking a bad habit, you’re far more energized to deal with it. You can see the future that you want, and you’re striving to attain it.

Frame It Better

People often talk about quitting their bad habits in terms of lack. For instance, they say “I need to quit smoking” instead of “I want to become a non-smoker.” Or they say, “I’m giving up junk food” instead of “I’m eating healthy recipes at the moment.”

How you frame your mission has a profound impact on your unconscious. If you talk yourself into believing that you’re missing out on something, then it’ll be doubly hard for you to kick the habit. However, if you start to believe that you might gain something, then it changes the calculus entirely. Suddenly, your unconscious is on your side.

Don’t Allow Negative Self-Talk to Win

Avoid negative self-talk. Just because you have a bad habit, it doesn’t mean that there is anything fundamentally wrong with you. Sometimes we can be our own worst critics. We can say things to ourselves like “I’ll never have the willpower to quit” or “I’m someone with an addictive personality.” These narratives are unhelpful and get in the way of progress.
