The needs and wants of a child in a wheelchair are the same as those of any other child. The only difference is that they might not be able to do what other people can do physically. This doesn’t mean that they can’t still be curious and playful, and it doesn’t mean that their lives must be lived any less comfortably than a child who isn’t in a wheelchair. The following are just a few of the many things you can do to make life easier for a youngster in a wheelchair:

Upgrade Your Vehicle

Children love to go on day trips because there is so much to learn and do, whether the trip is just for fun, is meant to teach them something, or is a mix of both. But it can be hard for a child in a wheelchair to enjoy and learn from these things because it can be hard to get them to different places. The best thing you can do is look for a car or van that is easy to get in and out of with a wheelchair. If you’re not sure what to look for, a company that specializes in mobility equipment service may be able to help you.

When you have the right car, you and your child can go anywhere and do anything. You won’t be limited to places you can get to by public transportation, for example. This will open the world to them and make sure that even long trips are much more comfortable.

Install a Wheelchair Ramp

When kids are young, they might not mind being carried by their parents. They might even like it. However, as they get older, they might not enjoy this anymore, and they might even feel embarrassed about being carried. Additionally, children get heavier as they grow. If you have steps up to your house or out to the backyard, for example, your child who uses a wheelchair will need help getting outside. Therefore, carrying them; at first, this won’t be a problem, but as they get older, bigger, and want to be more independent, it can become a major issue.

If you put in a wheelchair ramp, it’s not as much of an issue. The child will be able to come and go as they please, and you won’t have to carry them. You should have a professional install the ramp because it needs to be safe for your child. For example, you might need to measure the angle and make sure that any turns are at least five feet square.

Offer Stability in the Bathroom

As previously mentioned after a certain age, it can be embarrassing for a child to have to be picked up and carried by their parents. Now think about how they’ll feel if they need help going to the bathroom. It’s much better to make sure the bathroom is fully accessible by wheelchair, allowing your child the freedom and privacy they need.

Some things you’ll want to think about in the bathroom are:

  • Rails to hold on to in the toilet and tub
  • Move knobs and faucets down
  • Making sure a wheelchair has enough room to get in and turn around
  • Putting in a seat or bench in the shower or tub (or both)

When these things are in place, your child will feel much more at ease.
