When you’re caring for someone else’s well-being, you want to do your absolute best to make sure they remain in their best condition. This is especially essential if their health is already compromised, such as if they have sensitive food allergies or high blood pressure.

However, there may be times when the person you’re caring for wants a meal from their favorite restaurant. You want to make them happy, but you also have to consider the risk of food poisoning. So what steps should you take? Here are a few ways to prevent food poisoning at restaurants to stay ahead of foodborne illnesses.

Stay Wary of Your Surroundings

Whether you plan on doing carryout or sitting down, a restaurant can hide many dangers in plain sight. Note how clean the space is, from the entrance to the dining room, or even how organized the staff members are. Restaurant cleanliness isn’t just for self-satisfaction; restaurants have to follow regulations to remain open for business.

Check Restaurant Inspection Scores

One of the best ways to prevent food poisoning at restaurants is to check their inspection scores. Luckily, finding what you’re looking for won’t take a ton of research. All restaurants must undergo regular inspections from local health departments to ensure their food is not contaminated. Legally, restaurants must post their result publicly, and you can request their most current reports. So check the restaurant website or the local health department to see their results.

Stick to Locally Grown Entrées

When you’re looking over the menu, make your client aware of any locally grown entrées and special menu items. These meals are less likely to be contaminated, as they contain fresher ingredients and get replenished more often.

Send Back Meals That Don’t Look Right

There’s nothing wrong with sending back meals that don’t look, smell, or taste right. You’ll be less likely to have to deal with contaminants such as Cyclospora, and the restaurant will become more aware of other potential spoiled meals.

Don’t let your client become afraid of every meal they eat—just make sure you show them the research and the steps you took to make sure their favorite dishes aren’t contaminated. So, pick up that sirloin steak and mashed potatoes they love so much and let them enjoy the meal.
