Our loved ones deserve the best care we can give them, but not everyone knows what to watch out for. These warning signs can fly under the radar, or caregivers can attribute them to other causes rather than declining health.

But it is essential that you understand the signs your elder parents are having health problems. Catching the early warning symptoms can prevent more significant issues and serve to protect your elders to a much greater degree.

Their Home is in Bad Condition

One of the first and most obvious signs your parents are having health difficulties is by looking at the condition of their home. Don’t overlook increased clutter; it is most often a sign that your parents have trouble going about their daily lives. Chores become far more difficult as people age and their bodies can no longer keep up with the demands of housekeeping.

One result is that their house begins to fall into disarray. This is not their fault—they simply cannot do it themselves anymore. Take note of any clutter buildup, and offer your assistance whenever you can. Otherwise, the buildup can become a tripping hazard for your parents.

Provide Them the Means for Easier Living

There are a number of tools to make your parents’ lives easier, and giving them the necessary equipment can keep them more self-sufficient. You won’t be able to be there all the time, so it is essential that your parents have the tools to keep themselves active and safe.

They’re Losing Weight

A more serious symptom of ailing health is a noticeable loss in weight. Weight loss can happen for various reasons, and one of the most common is that they’re finding it more difficult to cook and prepare food. Similar to the previous point, your parents may experience more trouble preparing meals for themselves, so they may opt to go without because it’s easier.

A more concerning cause is underlying health conditions and illnesses. If your parents are eating regularly but are still losing significant amounts of weight without explanation, you need to take them to a doctor. You need the opinion of a medical professional to solve the issues and provide instructions for how to proceed in the safest way possible.

Their Vehicle Needs Obvious Repairs or Maintenance

A subtle sign that your elder parents are having some difficulties can come from inspecting their vehicle. Take note of any new scratches, dents, or scuffed paint; they may all indicate increased collisions or minor accidents. Reduced driving ability can come from impaired reflexes, slower reaction times, and decreased visual acuity—all of which will only deteriorate further.

Have a conversation with them about driving alternatives or other methods to go about their daily routines. Everyone needs to run to the store, but you and your parents can come up with different solutions if they can no longer drive safely.

Don’t be Afraid to Talk to Them

You need to address these situations with your parents; allowing them to continue without intervening can have disastrous consequences. Make sure they are as healthy as possible and do not pose a danger to themselves or others.
